Tushar Khadtare says, "We contracted Casa Utopia for a maior renovation (complete kitchen remodel, addition of another bedroom, flooring, upgraded electrical) of our SFH in 2024. They understood our requirements and budget and came up with architectural and structural design plans. In this process they were very patient and refined the plans until we were completely satisfied. They also helped us with getting the required permits and design approval from the city.We also had help from their in house interior designers who recommended finished materials(flooring, cabinets, paints, hardware) and sourced the them from reliable vendors. Once all permits were available the team at Casa Utopia were very efficient in implementing the design. The project was managed professionally and there was very good communication between us to ensure that the work gets done in time, within budget and good quality. I would definitely hire them for my future project and recommend them to others who want a worry free experience in remodeling their house."See more

Aaron Cowdin says, "Our project was a gut remodel of our two level San Francisco Sunset tract home, including the creation of living space out of the unfinished lower level/garage.Before we started working with Realty Builders we had almost given up on being able to remodel our home. We had wasted money working with a design and build firm to get an unworkable design far outside of our budget. We decided to take our project to general contractors and see if anyone thought our plan could be executed, at least in part, for a better price. Some contractors didnt even show up. Some looked at our plans, gave us wildly different quotes, positive and negative, but it just seemed like another job to them. The moment that Victor walked into our home and talked with us about our project, I knew he was interested in more than just a job. He walked through every room and all around the exterior, we talked about the design we had paid for, we talked about how we lived and what we wanted from our remodel. Even at the first meeting he was riffing on our design, walking through ideas, talking about potential issues and how to solve them.A week later, Victor said something that sealed the deal for me. He said, Your design is not good. I can build it for you, but you will end up with a house of depressing little boxes. I want to make a house that you will love. He showed us that he had completely thrown out the original design options and created something new, himself. After many months of engineering, demolition, permitting, construction, material shopping, designs, etc. I am writing this from the home that Victor designed and his crew built. He was 100% right. We love our home. It is bright, airy, built for both entertaining and private spaces, organically connecting both the main floor and our garage level now converted to wonderful living space.Realty worked hard to stick to the contracted price, and for all known items, they did exactly that. Because we were remodeling an old San Francisco home, of course there were surprises and extra options. Each time a surprise came, or an optional change came up, Realty let us know about the change and gave us multiple options with various prices for those options. So while we went somewhat into extra budget, we had a lot of choices in how to meet surprises and how to pay for them.I know nothing about construction, but friends and family who do would often come by the house during construction and comment on the high quality of the work being done. When I was present for inspections, I often heard the inspector make off hand positive comments about the quality of the work. Generally we breezed through inspections for this reason. When there were issues, Realty fixed them. When there were problems, Realty would address them. When some of our subcontractors failed, Realty stepped up and dealt with the failures. We are very satisfied and will work with Realty again."See more

Mike T. says, "We've always hated our upstairs bathroom. After 12 years of dragging our feet, this spring we started interviewing contractors. All seemed competent (but what do we know), all had good reviews. We went with Method Remodeling because... I don't even know why but let's say we had a good feeling. Honestly it was the best decision we made relative to this home. They were thorough. Showed up every single day (including weekends). Communication was impeccable - we always knew the plan for the day and week. I work from home and if I had an important call needing more quiet, they happily worked around all that. They also converted our loft to a bedroom at the same time - another decision we'd long debated. We love our bathroom. Doran and team feel like extended family now, they're great people who took good care of us. So much so that before they finished upstairs we asked them to do our downstairs powder room too with extra tile we had - start to finish in 6 days! Boom! What stands out most is quality. When things had to be redone (as in any project), Pinot, Doran and their people were more critical of their crews work than we were! The project didn't upend our world too badly and we're so happy. Highly recommended!!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I hire a contractor to finish or remodel my basement?

To hire the best contractor, you need to spend some time comparing pros in your area. Search online for top-rated basement refinishers and remodelers, and check out the customer reviews and photos on their profiles. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you’re browsing their profiles:

  • How responsive and communicative are they?
  • Did they finish preview basement remodeling projects by the deadline?
  • Do they have enough experience finishing basements?
  • Do the contractors offer fair pricing?
  • How is their craftsmanship?

License requirements for contractors vary by state, so check to see if your contractor needs to be licensed before you hire. You should always hire a contractor who has the proper credentials.

Before you hire a contractor, however, get written estimates. Contact at least three to five basement refinishers to receive price quotes and ask questions. Hire the contractor you feel has the most experience, great craftsmanship and fair pricing.

How much does finishing a basement cost?

The average cost to finish a basement is $8,448. Factors that affect this cost include whether you need to install a bathroom (and hence plumbing), as well as how much electrical work needs to be done. The square footage of the basement also correlates with price, with more expensive flooring like hardwood or tile costing more. The same goes for all materials.

Talk to top-rated basement refinishers in your neighborhood to find out how much you can expect to pay. And read the cost guide for basement finishing to learn more about the cost factors.

What's the best floor for a basement?

Choosing the best floor for a basement begins with knowing what not to install. Anything that absorbs moisture like hardwood and laminate flooring are typically not the best choices. The most moisture-resistant choice is an epoxy floor, which effectively forms a moisture seal. Other options include ceramic tile, vinyl or rubber flooring.

In what order should I finish my basement?

Finishing your basement starts with planning. It’s important to have carefully designed plans, as well as permits from your local government. You should also find a general contractor or basement refinisher to help you with the planning and construction process.

The first step in building is usually the framing and insulation, followed by routing electrical wire and wiring your receptacles and outlets. This is followed by plumbing. Once plumbing is complete, the next step is usually hanging drywall and mudding, taping and sanding it. After this comes adding doors and trim, and then flooring.

Is it worth finishing a basement?

Finishing a basement could be worth the cost if you plan to use the space. If you’re planning on selling your home in the future, note that several past studies and reports found that there is some return on investment for basement remodels. However, how much you recoup will depend on your particular home and real estate market. It’s important to have realistic expectations for the value that a finished basement will add to your home. To find out if you should finish, remodel or refinish your basement, talk to a real estate expert and basement refinishers near you.

What is the best waterproof flooring for a basement?

There are several great options for waterproof basement flooring. For example, epoxy floors are waterproof but are thicker and sturdier than paint. Make sure the concrete substrate has been prepared for application.

Tile is a designer’s dream, giving you a moisture-resistant surface that’s infinitely customizable. Rubber sheets or tiles are also good waterproof options, particularly for playrooms, workout areas or laundry rooms.

Vinyl tiles and planks imitate wood or other materials very convincingly, provide moisture resistance and last a long time. And sheet vinyl is affordable and a great waterproofing solution for those in need of quick fixes.
