I do not normally leave one-star reviews, as I am extremely considerate of how people earn a living. I am also a creative myself, so I understand the importance of maintaining a reputation. However, this has been the worst experience I have ever had with a “contractor” and I put that in quotations for a reason, which I will explain. Initial Agreement On August 17th, I reached out through Thumbtack inquiring about cabinet covering. I provided a brief description of the project, and Sam responded with an agreed amount of $400. I then called him to go into further detail about the scope of work, confirming whether the full project could be completed for the same price. During this call, I explained that the contact paper I had purchased required heat to mold. I told him I had tried using a blow dryer but realized it was too tedious. Sam confirmed that a proper heating tool would be required, and I agreed. I specifically asked if this was included in the price, and he confirmed that it was. I also explained that the flooring was peel-and-stick tile, and that I already had the necessary materials , the contact paper and tiles. We had about a five minute conversation to finalize all details. After the call, I confirmed the agreed date and time by text: Saturday at 8 AM. Later the night before (10PM), I asked to adjust the time to 1 PM due to a meeting, and he agreed. Workday Issues When Sam arrived, he only brought a small bag, which I found unusual for someone presenting themselves as a contractor or handyman. Soon after arriving, he stated that he could not complete the cabinets because he did not bring a heating tool, despite this being discussed on the phone. He then told me he lived too far away to go back for it and would have to return another day. Since I am a considerate person and wanted him to leave with work, I asked him to finish painting my kitchen instead, which my spouse and I had started but not completed. It only required a second coat of the same white paint in a very small kitchen. Sam said this would be $200, which I found unreasonable for the small square footage, but I agreed to keep him working. The paint job was completely unprofessional. Regarding the flooring, Sam then claimed that because my tiles were 7x7 instead of 12x12, adhesive was required to fill the spaces. I had never heard of such a requirement for peel-and-stick flooring. He also said he could not complete the areas behind my stove or refrigerator until another day, even though I had already unplugged and moved them. I told him that I was not going to pay for incomplete work. He reluctantly completed more of the flooring but still left several areas uncovered, stating he did not want to “waste tiles” on small spaces. As if the titles weren’t purchased for that very reason. He also improperly installed the flooring over my hallway’s silver transition strip, making it unstable. At the end of the day, I still paid him $400, despite the fact that the work was incomplete. He promised to return on September 5th to finish. Follow-Up and Lack of Professionalism After thoroughly checking the kitchen once he left, I noticed how sloppy and incomplete the work truly was. I immediately messaged him, requesting that he return sooner than September 5th to finish, since I had paid for full completion that day. He read my messages but ignored them. The next day, I followed up again. He read the message and still did not reply. When I finally called, he said that he didn’t get home until 10 PM and texting me around that time was unprofessional. However, he had no problem responding quickly at 10 PM the night before when I asked to change the project time. During the job, he also tried to get me to focus on his positive reviews instead of the work he was doing in my home. But I told him I can only judge based on my own experience and my experience was extremely disappointing. Ultimately, after I insisted that he refund me for the incomplete work, he returned $200. I accepted this, as I no longer felt comfortable having him in my home. Final Notes The work was sloppy, unprofessional, and left incomplete. He also left my kitchen in a mess with paint brushes sitting in the tray and peel-and-stick scraps all over the floor. To make matters worse, he came to the job with nothing but a small bag (the size of a lunchbox) containing only smoothing tools and screwdrivers. This was not the preparedness or professionalism I expected from someone presenting themselves as a contractor. PS. Yes I live in an older building which is my reason for jazzing things up.
